Pronounced /ˈmɛbən/), this dynamic community of residents spans young and old, progressive and conservative. You'll find farmers, neurosurgeons, and teachers calling Mebane home -- and loving it here. From the annual nighttime Christmas parade and First Thursday shopping to the springtime's Dogwood Festival and the bustling community garden, there is something for all in Mebane.
Downtown Mebane
Mebane is located along Highway 70, and its downtown is like many classic North Carolina cities -- charming yet modern. Old meets new as shoppers flock to the town's famous antique stores or peruse the funky finds at modern boutiques like SolGarden and The Elegant Relic. Recently, Mebane welcomed the opening of several new eateries, including Karma on Third and Reed's Downtown Table. Locals also take full advantage of Mebane's walkability, both to downtown and to the adjacent civic and private entertainment facilities. From the recently-renovated public library to the opening of Z Bowl, a bowling alley and eatery, there's much to do within a short walk of the downtown historic district neighborhoods.
Convenience
Because of its proximity to both Raleigh Durham and Greensboro, many professionals and academics choose to call Mebane home. Downtown neighborhoods are located about three miles from Interstates 40 and 85 allowing commuters to be in the heart of Raleigh or Greensboro within 35 minutes, respectively. Mebane is also home to the recently-opened Tanger Outlet Mall, a $45 million facility that boasts Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth, Brooks Brothers, Nike, Gap, J Crew, and many other stores.
Community
Mebane's most endearing feature is, of course, its residents. Though many residents are multiple generation Mebanites, this small city is rapidly changing. Because of its friendly neighborhoods, impeccable safety record, and quality schools, Mebane is attracting young families, retirees, and artists from around the Triad and Triangle to its tree-lined streets. Its charm and sophistication made it the subject of a recent North Carolina Weekend profile, which can be viewed here:
